”BREAKFAST IS READY!” Taking you back, Sunday morning, Mommie hollers, as we all rush for a seat at the table, because with so many kids (the little and the grown), hesitate for a second and you’ll be at the kiddie table and the last to be served! DAG! My cousin pushes me out of the seat! You cheat! Oh, and forget to wash your face, caught not washing your hands and you lose your seat at the table! DANG! Auntie would yell, “Go wash your face, boy,“ as we kiddies would snicker! And, and, oh don’t even think about talking with food in your mouth; get you sent straight to the pantry to eat alone in silence!
You would miss all the fun & laughter when you were in exile at the kiddie table or worse, the pantry! So, perhaps why, for my DINING EXPERIENCES, it’s important that everyone sit at the same table and, while it all appears formal, etiquette can be challenging, I mean, with all the slurp’n and the burp’n! LOL
Back in the day, Grandma (we all called her Mommie) was always in the kitchen cooking, while grandfather, fathers, uncles, then aunts, cousins, guests (what guests; all family) were served first in that order; we children, got what was left! I remember one time getting the last cold pancake, no more syrup, not even a strip of bacon (never the tasty fatty part, but the tough, dried up part), scraps of eggs, potatoes gone, too! You didn’t complain! You ate what made it to your plate and thankful you got that! I snicker, because I always had to clean up, I would often sneak what little scraps of food sometimes left on a plate. Hey, ain’t no shame in my game! LOL
AMAZING what influences your life! For I was a slave to the kitchen all my childhood, always I had to clean up - NOT COOK, but clean - two, three times a day; so, I was always in the kitchen with my grandmother and my Aunt Shirley, watching, helping, tasting, testing, CLEANING UP! So, of course, I have my methods and why I say, ”Thanks, but no thanks,” when my guests offer to help clean up. “Nope, um good!” You see, for me, there‘s a sense of pageantry even in the clean up!
Though, just something about that last cold pancake, I guess, stuck with me! Perhaps why I always make too much food and it must be served hot! You will never leave my table feeling lack or disappointment. But ALWAYS filled and not with just good, fresh food, but with WONDERFUL MEMORIES OF FAMILY, FRIENDS, CONVERSATIONS AND LAUGHTER! My fondest memories to this day; no matter who sits at my table! #ThingsThatMakeYouGoOom
So, I guess I always sought that same feeling WITH FOOD whenever, wherever I sat down to eat, always mindful of the freshness, the flavors, the love, the warmth, the thoughtfulness, the service, the cleanliness, the ambiance, the company - THE DINING EXPERIENCE.
